Dr Cristian Suau

Cristian is a Chilean-Spanish architect SAR/COARQ/UCh (hons). He holds an European Ph.D. in Architecture (hons) and Master in Urban Design from Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) combined with advanced postdoctoral research experiences on eco-design, experimental housing design and urban regeneration in Sweden, Norway and Spain. His main research-by-design areas are Adaptive Urbanism, Transformative Landscape, Eco-design and Housing Design.
Cristian has a solid foundation of ecological design excellence; conceptualisation; innovative and cross-disciplinary vision; and leadership internationally with proficiency experience in the fields of human settlements development; urban planning, design and landscape; and architecture through urban studies and designs, recognised research publications and bespoke consultancy.
Cristian was lecturer in Architecture at the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA), UK (2007-2013) where he pioneered Vertical Studios (Wales), the ART BOX (China), Nomadic Allotments (LFA, London) and FP7 EMUVE as scientific coordinator. Then senior lecturer in Architecture at Strathclyde University (2013-2016) as director of the Glasgow Project Office (GPO), design unit lead Radical Architecture, ERASMUS visiting professor and MOBILELAND VIP programme co-ordinator.
Professionally he founded and co-led RECICLARQ www.reciclarq.org in Barcelona (2006). Cristian was urban project leader (senior architect) in the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), Rotterdam (2006-2007) developing Almere Homerus master plan, PRADA Seoul pavilion and Fondazione, and administrative complexes.
Since 2011 he is director of ECOFABRICA, a studio that has offered expertise in ecological planning (i.e.: cycling routes along the Slovene Adriatic EUROVELO 9 network; educational consultancy in the Balkan Region via TEMPUS & ERASMUS+ KLABS project (2015-2016); COST TU1201(WG2) urban research support to the EU research network on community garden allotments in Europe; international awarded projects in housing, urban design and landscape projects: Europan 8 Norway on mobile homes in Hamar (Norway, 2006); Bulnes boulevard renewal (Chile, 2012) and MOBILELAND, a community-led urban regeneration initiative (Glasgow, 2014-2016).
Currently Cristian is co-leading a new project called STUDIO POP, pioneering social enterprise that ‘pops’ natural based solutions and eco-design innovations with strong social, technological and environmental impacts in communities through life cycle thinking (LCT), service design and collaborative work in the areas of ecology, art, design and construction: www.studiopop.net

STUDIO POP© is a new Scottish social enterprise (also Universal) that works alongside people to creatively co-design public spaces, art installations and dwellings that are green, healthy, safe, enjoyable and convivial. They offer great expertise in engaging with culturally diverse communities in creative ways to empower change, collaboration, synergies, interactions and mutual support to provide nature-based solutions enhance the resilience of human settlements and build community cohesion.
STUDIO POP© leads in social interaction and design innovation for social cohesion, environmental recovery strategies, urban ecology, inclusive habitat regeneration, ecological design, participatory pedagogies and research by tackling the role of ‘place-making’ in meeting the environmental, social and cultural needs of diverse communities and their identities, potential and challenges.
STUDIO POP provides an ecological design platform, which focuses on resolving spatial, social and environmental problems in our habitats through the principles of urban resilience, service design and waste remaking (reuse, recycling and recovering) by empowering green, creative and healthy communities, enhancing our built environment and optimising co-design and collaborative work. We will enhance human health, wellbeing and social cohesion.
STUDIO POP© brings a broad range of design, social sciences and humanities disciplines such as urbanism, landscape, public art and systemic design studies and also trans-disciplinary and community-based approaches to think, play and make cultural diversity and public spaces including education, urban design, landscape ecology, horticulture, eco-design, service design, creative arts, cultural planning and community empowerment.
STUDIO POP supports educational organisations, creative industry and local communities in the co-designing, co-development and co-implementation of visionary, systemic and transformative social ideas.

WWW reciclarq barcelona
RECICLARQ© is a Barcelona-based non-profit association focuses on cultural, educational, scientific and technological solutions, with a primal goal in emergent architecture and remaking. This NGO offers sustainable alternatives in different applications and scales. The aims are to create, investigate, evaluate and promote sustainable urban, architectural and artistic spatial systems through the strategies of recycling, recovering and passive energy systems and to stimulate cooperation and collaboration with public, private and third parties.

MOBILELAND©

This project is a temporary community garden, which was my personal initiative. I coordinated all landscape, architectural and educational aspects of this eco-design solution. It is situated in a brownfield site in Gorbals, Glasgow (UK). It was financially supported by GCC and the programme Stalled Spaces Glasgow with a lease agreement and start-up grant.

URBAN RESTART©
WWW urban restart
Is a temporary architecture and urban art platform based in Scotland. They engage public and recreate space by applying low- tech methods and up-cycled materials.
